Combining multiple types of datasets supported by Aroaro, we could tell a story among multiple complicated, structured and unstructured datasets more effectively anywhere and anytime.

Below, we will show you one example:

UNCLE FREDDY’S STORY – The story of Uncle Freddy is a true story and is used here to illustrate how Aroaro’s mapping tool can be used to tell a story. Based on datasets of people, places, and events created from almost unknown family histories, Freddy’s war record, and other sources, a sketch of the life of this “unknown” warrior can be appreciated from many different viewpoints.

Datasets of Uncle Freddy’s Story

We collect data from family and record events, dates, times, locations, places and images. The sample data can be downloaded from our ‘Download’ Page. We build visualization from Uncle Freddy’s datasets. It tells us his life stories from the 90s with rich media information. Please watch a few videos we made below.

Mapping

From Data to Story

This shows how the dataset to the left is mapped onto the map points to tell the story. The scene here is Le Quesnoy, where he was killed in the last week of the war and where his great-great-granddaughter built the Peace Garden, Rangimarie, for the 100th anniversary of the end of the war, unaware at the time of Uncle Freddy’s Story.

Network View

A network view of the same data shows many interesting details, such as people who, as yet, are not connected to any events. Naturally, as this dataset represents Uncle Freddy’s Story, he has the highest number of connections through events.

More of the Same in a Different Setting (Kohimarama)

Imagine taking this experience or others you have composed by creating a dataset of people, places and events, to the locations of meaning. For instance, in this case, Le Quesnoy is the site of Uncle Freddy’s death, and his great-great niece’s Garden of Peace, Rangimarie, commemorates the liberation by the New Zealand Division.
